Hi my name is Laura Roberts
and I am originally from Idaho Falls, but I now live in Herriman Utah which is
in about 25 minutes away from Salt Lake City. My major is Health
Education and Promotion with emphasis on school health. I am excited to
teach high school because I think that the youth are amazing!!
Twenty years ago I started my
college education at Ricks and then stepped away from school to raise my five
beautiful children, and now that they are older I feel that now is the time to
finish what I started 20 years ago. My two oldest sons are serving LDS
missions right now. My oldest son left a
year ago to the Adriatic South Mission. My next son left on his mission
to Lyon, France in October. Then comes my two beautiful daughters who both
dance on the drill team at their high school, finally comes my 13 year old son
who loves to play football and wrestle. I love being a mother.
I have my major
in health education and promotion and a minor in physical
education/coaching. I will be certified
to teach health and physical education. I
hope to teach health and use the physical education to coach either volleyball
or basketball at a high school.
I
am very interested in health and nutrition and this drew me to choose health as
my discipline. I would define my
discipline as learning what the health risks are and what you can do now to
have a great quality of life. It is
important to learn about nutrition and also about why exercise is important.
Literacy
is the ability to read and write and also knowledge in a specified area.
Yes,
literacy relates to my content area because there are articles that are health
related and I feel that literacy relates to any subject at school. In any subject you need to be able to read a
write and understand what you are reading.
I also feel that students need to have health knowledge about nutrition
and the importance of exercise.
Hi Laura,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your first posting. That is great that you define health as maximizing the quality of your life. When you look at the media, so many products are advertised towards our bodies. In other words, the products claim they can make us look younger, thinner, more muscular, and so on. It is SO vital that students are able to read these texts critically so they don't end up making decisions that damage their health! For instance, there are so many diets that claim to lead to health, and even a lot of adults buy into them. Yet many diets are not healthy. So (personally) I think one component of literacy is teaching students to evaluate health information.
Thanks again, and I look forward to reading more of your ideas as the semester progresses.
P. S. Here is a US News Report in which they rank all of the most popular diets of 2014 in terms of their ability to promote health.

Hi, my name is Rebecca Wilkinson. I also love and enjoy being with my children. It is fun to watch them grow and become successful in the world. Literacy has been interesting to think about within my discipline of teaching. I knew that it would be something I would need to teach in class but I haven't thought what it really is until this class. Literacy is much more than reading and writing it is also comprehension of text. Most knowledge is gained through literacy so people that are illiterate in society have a different life than what we can comprehend. Kids today complain of going to school and take things for granted. I think I would like to ask them, How far in life could you go with the education they have? Why is important to go to school? I really want them to think and be apart of their own education.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like we have a lot of the same interests...I watch lots of sports with my kids or used to since they are almost grown it's coming to an end and I love to crochet and do craft projects. Health sounds very interesting to study, especially learning about being more healthy.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you will be an amazing teacher in the field of Health Education, as well as a good example of living a healthy and active lifestyle. I think it's great that you're going back to school, and I wish you the best of luck!
