Critical Literacy

Historically people of color have been excluded from my discipline.  My discipline is health and for many years they had statistics for white people and not really for other cultures.  I had a teacher at college that excited my learning about diverse topics and we had to all do a presentation on a health topic that was diverse.  It was really interesting to see the topics that all the students picked and presented.  I learned a lot that semester about a lot of different diverse topics that are in the United States.  I never really had a teacher that excluded diverse people.

For my discipline I intend to have statistics for all people.  For example if my lesson is on diabetes I would have statistics for diabetes for all races.  As a teacher I will not exclude an ethnicity when I give lessons on health topics and I when I prepare a lesson if a student needs me to prepare the lesson in a different language I will.  So for example if a student speaks Spanish and is trying to learn English I would prepare my PowerPoints in English and Spanish.

Digital text is amazing and it allows us to connect to other teachers from all over the world.  This helps us to learn from each other and to gather ideas from other educators that have more experience. I decided to do a pinterest board for lesson plans on health.  While doing this I found so many ideas that I could work into my own lesson plans and different ways I can teach the many subjects that is covered in health class.  I also found many pinterest health teachers to follow so I can see what lesson plans they are using and get some ideas from them.

From my article that I read it talked about smartphones becoming a new way of life and that there are many apps that pertain to health and physical fitness and technology is a strategy to help promote this idea.    We need to embrace technology and use these apps as part of the health and fitness curriculum.

I can use what I learned about digital text and tell my students about apps that can help them become more healthy and physical fit. Choosemyplate.gov is a government based website that can help students be more knowledgeable about what and how much they are eating.  There is also an app that you can use with choosemyplate.gov,  so it is more mobile and on the go for teenagers to use in their busy life.  There are numerous apps that I can explain to my students to help them and guide them to be more nutritious and be able to get up and move more.

Here is a link to my pinterest board that I created to help me plan my lesson plans for my students.
